[SMM topic] Summary of the output of the World's Major Nickel miners in 2019

SMM2, 14 Jun: for the nickel mining market, there are no lack of major events in 2019, during which Indonesia's mining ban bill particularly stirred up market nerves. Glencore:

The company's nickel production in 2019 was 120600 tons, down 3200 tons, or 3%, from 2018, mainly due to a large number of maintenance shutdowns at Koniambo, including crane failures in December 2019.

Norilsk Nickel:

In the fourth quarter of 2019, nickel production increased by 8 per cent to 62 kt, month-on-month, almost entirely from Russia's own raw materials, due to increased production of nickel concentrates sold to third parties and the expansion of Kola MMC carbonyl ji nickel production capacity. In 2019, combined nickel production increased by 5 per cent to 229kt from a year earlier, due to the gradual increase in nickel refineries using new chlorine leaching technology, the expansion of carbonyl ji nickel production and the start-up of low-grade nickel concentrate production to sell to Kola MMC third parties and more third-party raw materials for processing in Norilsk Nickel Harjavalta. The company's own production of nickel from Russia totaled 225 kt, in line with the highest level of production guidance for 220-225 kt in 2019.

Anglo-American Resources:

On the nickel side, nickel production in the fourth quarter of 2019 was 11700t, up 3% from the same period in 2018, reflecting an increase in operational stability. Nickel production for the whole of 2019 was 42600t, up 1% from the same period in 2018. Production guidance will remain unchanged at 42000-44000 tons in 2020.

Vale:

The annual nickel output of 208 kt, in 2019 is consistent with the annual guidance value of 210-220 kt, which is 15.0% lower than that in 2018. Production reflects a reduction in raw materials from third parties and a reduction in raw mines in Thompson and VNC, the latter due to the availability of processing plant operating assets during the limited year and the decline in production of On ç a Puma, followed by judicial authorization to resume mining and processing activities in September. Nickel operations were also affected during the year as a result of the maintenance shutdown of the North Atlantic refinery and production has now resumed and is now operating at a normal rate. VNC's refining activities, which are responsible for processing feed into nickel oxide, will cease in April 2020 as part of a process to improve short-term cash flow. By simplifying this process, VNC's nickel portfolio will consist only of nickel hydroxide cakes.

ANTAM

ANTAM's nickel production in 2019 was used as ore raw material for the ANTAM Nife plant and sold to third-party smelters and export markets in the country, totaling 8.69 million wet metric tons of (Wmt). In the fourth quarter of 2019, nickel production was 1.3 million wet metric tons of (Wmt). In 2019, ANTAM sold 7.56 million wet metric tons of (Wmt). In the fourth quarter of 2019, nickel mine sales were 2.05 million wet metric tons of (Wmt).
